Infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality ratio (MMR), 1981 - 2024

In Hong Kong, the infant mortality rate (IMR) decreased from 9.7 per 1 000 registered live births in 1981 to 1.7# in 2024 while the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has fluctuated between 0 and 11.2 per 100 000 registered live births in the past 44 years.

The figures are based on births or deaths registered under the Births and Deaths Registration Ordinance (Cap. 174, Laws of Hong Kong) during the specified period.

Since some maternal deaths are registered only upon the completion of Coroner's investigation, these maternal deaths may be registered in the same year of or a later year after death occurred.  For example, the three maternal deaths registered in 2021 occurred in 2016, 2020 and 2021 respectively.
