CHP Symposium - Updates on TB, STI and HIV

Date 19 February 2006 (Sunday)
Title / Program CHP Symposium - Updates on TB, STI and HIV
Description Introduction

The SARS epidemic in the year 2003 has underpinned the importance of strengthening inter-agency collaboration and communication in combating communicable diseases. The impending threat from avian influenza has been escalating in recent years. Moreover, a number of emerging, re-emerging, and long existing infectious diseases are recognized as important threats to the health of the community.

TB, STI, and HIV are three common infectious diseases of major public health importance locally. In fighting the battle against these communicable diseases, the best strategy is to ensure that our health professionals are well trained and supported and that the community is well informed. The CHP was established in 2004 to set up a health protection system backed by a well trained workforce, solid professional expertise, an informed community and seamless collaboration with local and international partners, so as to strengthen our preparedness and capability in disease prevention and control.

The recent designation of our PHLC as a Supranational TB Reference Laboratory marked a major step forward. This Symposium is organized as a related event, in recognition of this important designation, and to provide an opportunity to share experience and professional knowledge for combating these diseases.
