The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health last night (January 9) received notification from the Ministry of Health concerning a confirmed human case of avian influenza H5N1 in Anhui.
A CHP spokesman said the patient was a 37-year-old male farmer who developed fever and pneumonia on December 10, 2006 . He was admitted to a hospital for treatment. He subsequently recovered and was discharged on January 6. Laboratory tests on the patient’s specimen by China Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention yielded positive to H5N1 on January 8.
The CHP is maintaining close liaison with the Ministry of Health to obtain more information on the case.
