Hand hygiene is a simple yet effective means to prevent and control infectious diseases, both in healthcare settings and in the community. Since 2010, the Department of Health echoes the efforts of the World Health Organization in promoting "Hand Hygiene Day" on 5 May every year. The theme for Hand Hygiene Day 2021 is "Cover your Cough & Sneeze Then Clean your Hands Please".
Regardless of age, proper cough etiquette and hand hygiene should be observed. All of us are more aware of the importance of hand hygiene amidst the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), but we can still see people coughing or sneezing without proper cover (they should keep their mask on or cover their mouth and nose with tissue, blouse or upper sleeve) and do not immediately clean their hands afterwards. Being considerate and remembering the options when our nose get itchy will surely help to make a good habit last. The Infection Control Branch of the Centre for Health Protection, Department of Health would like to offer some tips for all, young children, adults and elders, and hope they will take note and try to adopt these good practices. With concerted efforts, we believe Hong Kong will become a healthier and more hygienic city.
