Exercise and Diabetes
The Population Health Survey 2020-22 conducted by the Department of Health revealed that 24.8% of Hong Kong people aged 18 or above had insufficient physical activity, and 54.6% of people aged 15 to 84 were overweight and obese. Physical inactivity, along with overweight or obesity, is known to increase the risk of developing diabetes mellitus. As with all diseases, prevention is better than cure, and diabetes mellitus is no exception. Both the general public and high-risk individuals are advised to lower the risk of diabetes mellitus by staying physically active and maintaining an ideal weight. For people with diabetes, there is a greater need for them to have regular physical activity to keep their weight and blood sugar level under control and alleviate their symptoms.
